First of all…..
Thank you so much to everyone who has subscribed and read my first post! It really means a lot to me and I hope that I can give those who are chronically online (like me) another reason to be on the internet for five more minutes each week.
And now to this week’s post! I wanted to go over some goals I have for this year. Resolutions as they are popularly called! I’ve never been one to make resolutions, or stick to them when I do. But I do also think that it’s a good device to put your thoughts and hopes into action with a certain amount of accountability attached to them, especially when you post about them publicly online!
1. Watch 100 New (to me) Movies
I can be a critical person, a hater even. Except for when it comes to movies where I like and enjoy 95% of the movies I see. Ask me about Babylon (loved it! (I think)), Saltburn (liked it!), The Marvels (it was fun!), any polarizing movie you probably hated. I probably at least liked it enough to be a good excuse to have AMC mozzarella sticks (my favorite meal).
My goal last year was to watch 75 new movies and I ended up seeing 78! I am very happy to have met my goal (just barely, I watched 12 new movies in December). It might be more sensible to make my new goal 85 or 90 but I’m not in the business of picking numbers that aren’t divisible by 25, so 100 it is.
BTW here is my letterboxd if you care to follow, my ratings are wildly inconsistent and don’t meant much. It should also be noted that for me, a 3-star biopic is not he same as a 3-star comedy is not the same as a 3-star drama is not the same as a 3-star dramedy and so on and so on.
2. Take More Pictures
There is a lot of beauty to living in the moment, device-free, and really appreciating everything around you as it exists right now. I generally live that way, and you know what that has gotten me? NOTHING TO LOOK BACK ON FOR MY BEAUTIFUL EXPERIENCES.
Yes, yes, the memories will live inside my head I guess. But what good is anything in there? I can tell you that in there is not a safe space. I am going to make a real attempt to take more pictures this year so that my phone’s photo album doesn’t continue to look like a graveyard of long-forgotten screenshots.
3. Watch HBO’s Girls
Girls is one of those shows that I truly think I would love and enjoy, but it has the terrible affliction of being on a premium streaming service that I’m not currently paying for. Luckily, I have been offered access to an HBO account since my first post and I think that my dreams will finally become a reality this year. Maybe I can also finally watch the third season of The Other Two and the last two and a half seasons of Veep. Maybe I’ll even become a Sopranos girlie. The possibilities that come with access to prestige TV are endless.
4. Write Every Week
You’re telling me that if I want to take writing and comedy seriously I have to work hard at it? UGH! I should write often to sharpen my skills? That sounds tiring. What a cruel twist of fate.
But seriously, it can be hard to make time for things, even if you love them, when you already work full-time and are doing the act of trying to survive while living in a capitalist hellscape every day. Life itself is exhausting for just about everyone who doesn’t own a yacht and the things you like to do the most usually take a backseat to things like bills, catastrophic world events, and general impending doom.
I do want to make a better effort this year though. Sometimes inspiration comes in waves and it’s very easy to write. But sometimes you just need to write, inspired or not. I want to try to do that hard part of writing for the sake of writing!
16 Days into 2024
I have already watched 6 new movies, taken some pictures, obtained an offer for HBO access, and I've been writing! None of these goals are especially spectacular but for the most part I think they will make my life a little more fun. I’m excited for things to come in 2024, let me know if you have any goals for the year!
Whether it be to read 30 books, travel to a new country, meet Paul Mescal and fall in love, anything! We can keep each other accountable and maybe by doing so we can finally give Paul Mescal the love he needs even if he does end up running away from you in a park.
I, for one, am happy you will take more pictures! ❤️
